Garbled code appears in reports when content is pasted from Word2007

posted Jul 8, 2010, 4:05 AM by a.pastore@cgxchange.org   [ updated Jul 8, 2010, 4:37 AM ]

An unmanageable amount of junk code gets carried over into EasyMTP when you paste content directly from documents processed in Word2007.

This junk code slows down performance of EasyMTP, is not stripped off effectively in the reports, and can only be removed manually in the database.

Therefore, please do NOT paste any content directly from MS Word 2007, but follow one of the following procedures:

a. Paste content as plain text and apply any formatting as needed directly in the EasyMTP Rich Text Editor. This will not retain any formatting or tables which will have to be redesigned in the editor;

b. Copy text from Word, paste to a Google Doc, copy from the Google Doc, then paste to EasyMTP editor. This will transform text to HTML, still preserving some of the formatting that may be reapplied in EasyMTP editor.

c. Convert the document to Google Doc format. If larger than 500KB, split the document in sections and upload/convert separately. Copy content from the Google Doc then paste to EasyMTP editor.

Please contact the CGMap team at cgmap-support[AT]cgiar.org for ad-hoc Google Doc conversion support ONLY if your MTP content has been developed in Word 2007.

Content updates not showing in report?

posted May 15, 2009, 8:03 AM by a.pastore@cgxchange.org   [ updated Jun 10, 2009, 6:12 AM ]

Type: recommended procedure

We had reports of content changes not showing immediately either in the HTML or Word report, but only after a second attempt.

Rest assured that your content is saved. Browsers or proxy servers may store a copy of a previous report that you have generated, and keep showing the report in cache.

We recommend that you:
  • right-click on the report in the viewer and select Refresh until the content is correctly displayed;
  • alternatively, clear your browser cache and just generate another report at a later moment.

Unable to clean formatting?

posted May 15, 2009, 7:25 AM by a.pastore@cgxchange.org   [ updated May 15, 2009, 8:13 AM ]

Type: recommended procedure

Sometimes it happens that the Strip Formatting control, or just cutting and pasting content in Notepad would not remove unwanted formatting from text in the Rich Text Editor.

This happens when the fancy formatting carried over from MS Word remains in the HTML code. It can be so complex that the Strip Formatting control does not clean it completely.

In this set of screenshots, you will learn how to reveal the HTML code, clean it manually and paste clean text back in.

Output target year missing?

posted May 15, 2009, 7:13 AM by a.pastore@cgxchange.org   [ updated May 15, 2009, 8:14 AM ]

Type: known issue

This issue is already reported and unfortunately erratic. The years are in the list, but sometimes connectivity creates hiccups in connections and the list is not displayed properly.

We recommend that you just get out of the Output targets editing page to another section and then go back in.

Tags displayed in Output targets?

posted May 15, 2009, 6:56 AM by a.pastore@cgxchange.org   [ updated May 15, 2009, 8:15 AM ]

Type: known bug, fixing in progress

This is a bug in the display only. The tags don't show in the report eventually. Splitting the text of an OT on three lines, for example, is formatting, as it requires the HTML editor to insert the <br> tag.

This set of screenshots explain how to strip all formatting. Anyway, should you need to break text into separate lines, you can easily ignore the displayed tags. They are not displayed in the report.
